Science

The Science curriculum at Sebastopol Primary School is delivered throughout the second semester of each year.  Students’ complete units across all five science strands over a two-year cycle, including: Science as a Human Endeavour, Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, Chemical Science and Biological Science.

During lessons, students develop an understanding of important scientific concepts and processes, the practices used to develop scientific knowledge, and its applications in our lives.  Students develop their capacity to use the scientific method of questioning, planning, and conducting experiments and investigations, collecting and analysing data, evaluating results and drawing evidence-based conclusions.

Using the Victorian Curriculum, our science program aims to ensure that students:

  • develop understanding of the nature, processes, and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science
  • understand the uses and values of scientific work and achievements
  • develop an understanding and respect for the natural world
  • question, hypothesise, test, and discover for themselves about our world
  • develop the skills required to investigate the world around them
