Tuesday 26 of May was National Sorry Day.This significate date commemorates when the Bringing Them Home report being tabled in 1997 and has been observed every year since.
National Sorry Day serves to mark the beginning of Reconciliation Week and reminds us that the first step to fixing a problem is taking responsibility and holding yourself accountable. In 2008, Kevin Rudd did exactly that and issued a formal apology on behalf of the Australian government. This was such an important step toward reconciliation and the ‘Close the Gap’ movement.
At Sebastopol Primary School, classes observed this day by learning about the history of Sorry Day and completing activities to support the learning. Year 3 and 4 watched Kevin Rudd’s apology speech, read the book, Sorry Day, by Coral Vass and Dub Leffler. Year 3 even came down to the front of the school to read and discuss the Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples the holds pride of place in our school foyer. Year 1/2 learned about the meanings and symbolism of Australia’s Indigenous flags applied that knowledge to their artwork surrounding the National Sorry Day Timeline displayed on their Wow Wall.
